A Tradition Unlike Anywhere Else

Homecoming itself is a long-standing American tradition - a celebration that brings students, alumni, families, football, school spirit, and community together each fall. But here in Texas, we’ve made Homecoming unmistakably our own.

The tradition of giving a chrysanthemum for Homecoming dates back generations.

What began as a simple fresh flower, often given by a date and worn with a few ribbons in school colors, grew alongside Texas school spirit. Over the years, fresh flowers gave way to silk, ribbons became longer, and mums became bigger, more elaborate, and increasingly personal.

Today, a Texas Homecoming mum or garter is part school-spirit tradition and part snapshot of the student wearing it. School colors, names, class year, activities, organizations, interests, photos of friends and countless little details can all become part of the design.

For many students, each year’s mum marks another chapter, from that first Homecoming to the unmistakable Senior mum celebrating their final one.

It’s why we believe a mum should do more than match your school colors.

It should tell your story.

WHAT IS A MUM?
Traditionally worn by girls, a Homecoming mum is built around one or more silk chrysanthemums and decorated with ribbons, braids, bells, personalization and details representing the student.

WHAT IS A GARTER?

The counterpart to the mum, a Homecoming garter is traditionally worn on the upper arm and incorporates many of the same personalized elements in a smaller design.

WHO WEARS ONE?
Mums and garters aren't just for students attending the dance or those with a date. Today, students may receive one from parents, family, friends or a significant other—and many families make them part of Homecoming every year.

DO THEY CHANGE BY GRADE?
Traditionally, Yes! Underclassmen typically wear their school colors, while Seniors wear a classic all white with gold or silver design. The trends now have Seniors opting for personality colors or fun unique combos to help stand out. Designs also tend to become larger and more elaborate as students approach senior year.

WHEN DO YOU WEAR IT?
Traditions vary by school, but mums and garters are commonly worn on Homecoming Friday during school, pep rallies and the football game.

Texas Traditions officially began in 2013, but my love for making mums started long before that. I made my first mums and garters while I was still in high school and, more than 20 years later, somehow I’m still happiest surrounded by ribbon, glitter and a really good Homecoming color combination.

What started with making mums for local students has grown into Texas Traditions as it is today, serving families throughout DFW and across Texas. I could have never imagined back then what this little business would become - or just how big these mums would get!

A lot has changed over the years. The designs have gotten bigger, the details more personalized, and there are a whole lot more options than when I started. But my favorite part has always stayed the same: getting to create something that feels completely unique to the student wearing it.

After all these years, I still genuinely love what I get to do, and I’m so thankful Texas Traditions gets to be a small part of so many families' Homecoming traditions.
